The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of your education records. These records are considered confidential and cannot be released to third parties (including your parents) without your written consent.

Public vs. Private information
Certain information about you, called student directory or public information, can be released unless you’ve filed a request for nondisclosure. Other information, called protected information, cannot be released without your consent. Learn more below about each type of information and how to manage its privacy.
- How to restrict public information
Public information about you includes:
- University email address
- Dates of attendance
- Admission or enrollment status
- Currently enrolled status (Y/N)
- Campus, school, college, or division
- Class standing
- Degrees and awards
- Sports and athletic information
To restrict the release of all of this information (known as a total FERPA restriction), you’ll need to contact the registrar services team.
- How to release protected information
Protected information about you includes:
- Student ID number
- Social Security Number
- Address (local and permanent)
- Telephone number (local and permanent)
- Grades and exam scores
- Current class schedule
- Parent name and address
- Race and ethnicity
- Country of citizenship
- Religious affiliation
- Disciplinary status
- Marital status
- Test scores (e.g., SAT, GRE, etc.)

We gather ethnic information in compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. The U.S. Department of Education requests this information from us. Contact the registrar services team to refuse disclosure of this information or request its removal from your records without penalty.
